First witnessed in 2018 at the insurgent Minimum night from the Moscow finest Rabitza crew, Katya & Ilya's vibe un-jaded us forever. In a time of disenchantment, it brought back a sense of being alive, a revitalized belief in the power of sound. Good news, somehow the energy this pure you knew you had inside is going to resonate right there really soon.
The main and lasting impression of being at their live is what it must feel like to be buffed by teammate sorcerers in a video game. Layers upon layers of electric spell-casting empower you to start feeling like a main character, finally elevated to hyperphysical. Both musicians have been active in local experimental scene for years, but their joint project has made something unique out of the blend of Katya's noise-improv approach and Ilya's programmed beats. Ranging from unholy fx-scapes to lullabies but mostly striking as kinetic grooves, the band embodies a heavy, amplified synth sound, modern in its fluency with the machines, numinous in its cried-out invocations.
It's an experience you should have in person in a space with a high ceiling. Still, this self-titled release is an attempt to get a glimpse of their sound as studio recordings, with a collection of the first floor-tested tunes.
